Interview with Vassilios Alexiou at Less Rain
Marko: Heya Vassilios!
Vassilios: Yassou Marko!
Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Vassilios: I am Interaction Director at Less Rain and I run the London Office. I am also the founder of Less Rain along with Lars Eberle, who now runs the Berlin office.
Marko: How are you doing these days?
Vassilios: I am very well indeed, albeit a bit cold!
Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Vassilios: My first computer interface / experience was pong, somewhere in the late 70’s. My first keyboard experience was the Spectrum ZX of my mate.
Marko: What is your favourite art work /website!?
Vassilios: Wikipedia.
Marko: when you launched lessrain.co.uk are you happy with the result of the site?
Vassilios: We were quite happy we got lots of hits and attention.
Marko: What do you do in your spare time (I do realize that spare time, in this context, is pretty relative)?
Vassilios: I play music with my mates and record fantastic singles that will never get released!
Marko: Do you have a favourite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Vassilios: I like British Ales and Cockspur Rum.
Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Vassilios Alexiou?
Vassilios: Answer emails, brainstorm for 15 minutes, talk to a client, drink tea, write a proposal, answer more emails, look over people’s shoulders, troubleshoot, get pissed off, relax, drink tea, think, suggest solutions to problems, answer emails… etc.
Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Vassilios: Our websites do it for us most of the time. This is the beauty of it.
Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Vassilios: John Maeda & Jack Kerouac.
Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like? How did that take place and why?
Vassilios: While I was studying computers in Uni, I got really bored and decided to do something that did not have anything to do with computers – or so I thought in ‘88! So I started teaching myself design and set up a design / communications company in Greece. This lasted 6 years, until I finally got my overdue degree in computers in 1994 and decided to combine the 2 in interactive media. It was mostly cd-rom production at the time but it soon turned into creating web based interactive experiences.
Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Vassilios: Musician.
Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Vassilios: I think it features really cool interviews, especially lately!
Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Vassilios: Music that surprises me every time I hear it. But it gets harder and harder to find music like that; 2 years ago it was Lightning Bolt, last year was Ariel Pink, this year?
Marko: What’s your favourite food?
Vassilios: Homemade.
Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Vassilios: Bethnal Green Working Mens Club or Catch 22 if there is no private party happening. But generally, I avoid going out to clubs on Saturday as they play really commercial music…
some relaxing question to follow
Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Vassilios: Thai
Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Vassilios: None!
Marko: html or asp?
Vassilios: Html
Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favourite show?
Vassilios: Curb your enthusiasm.
Marko: What would we find in your favourites bookmarks-bar?
Vassilios: Old stuff I don’t use any more – got to clean it and fill it with web 2.0 stuff!
Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Vassilios: I am inspired by the process of playing / creating music and how that feeds into creating interactive interfaces.
Marko: Thank again for having this interview, cheers m8!
Vassilios: My pleasure!
