Interview with Ian James Cox- ianjamescox.com
Marko:Hello Ian !
Ian:Alreet!
Marko:For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Ian:I’m 20 years young and I work in the heart of Manchester at a design firm called Flame Digital.
Marko:How are you doing these days?
Ian:Fabulous actually, things have never been better.
Marko:When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Ian:In 1997 just before I started High school. I was about 11 years old!
Marko:What is your favorite art work /website!?
Ian:At the Moment?...Well i visit Stylegala more than twice a day. I’m a big fan of Ryan Sims and more recently Nigel Evan Dennis
Marko:When you launched ianjamescox.com are you happy with the result of the site?
Ian:Well, I knew I had a design I was happy with when I would re-open the design in photoshop hours/days later after last working on it and still enjoying it. The creativity fire was re-lit instantly. I’m sure you people know what I’m talking about, that excited feeling that drives you on. These days I still enjoy the design but I want to refresh it a little. I will be “realigning” it soon.
Marko:What do you do in your spare time (I do realize that spare time, in this context, is pretty relative)?
Ian:Spare Time? Well, recently I have not had much but when I do get some free time I like to play Football and generally hang out with friends.
Marko:Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Ian:Pepsi Max, its my caffeine boost!
Marko:Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Ian James Cox?
Ian:Wake, Wash, Walk, Transport, Settle, listen, work, eat, relax, work, transport, relax, eat, work, relax, laugh, wash, sleep, dream, wake!
Marko:I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Ian:Having a site listed on gallery sites such as CSS Vault helped. I literally started at the bottom. I built a portfolio using Designoutpost.com and networked. I have a few regular clients right now and they keep me active when I’m not at work.
Marko:Who are some of your biggest influences?
Ian:My mentors over the years such as teachers, tutors. I consider Bjřrgvin Gudmundsson – B-Man Artworks my biggest influence. My colleagues at the moment.
Marko:Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like? How did that take place and why?
Ian:I studied Fine Art and Media Studies in College after high school. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, I was just going with the flow back then. Then I soon realised that I wanted to design using computers as my aid. I quit the fine art course and did two years in Multimedia. I learnt that I want to be a designer for life. Doing a hobby as a profession is a dream.
Marko:If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Ian:Professional Footballer? ha ha I know everyone says that but I think I had the physical attributes as well as the technical ability but not the frame of mind. I knew I wanted to use my head and do something creative.
Marko:How do you like our site mcville.net?
Ian:Yeah, I like how minimal it is!
Marko:What kind of music do you fancy?
Ian:Indie, Brit pop. Manchester is the home of Indie music with bands such as Oasis, Joy Division/New Order, Stone Roses and the Smiths and many more began here. Its great. I’m also into NYC new wave also, bands such as Interpol and The strokes.
Marko:What’s your favorite food?
Ian:Pizza!!
Marko:Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Ian:Saturday nights I’m out with my friends dancing away relatively drunk. I’m 20! Got to live it up! ha ha
