Interivew with Adam Morris at quo.com.au
Marko: Heya Adam!
Hi Marko. Nice to meet you.
Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
I’m a 27 year old Web Designer from the Gold Coat, in Queensland, Australia.
Marko: How are you doing these days?
I’m doing well. Refreshed from a 2 month jaunt around Europe, I’m back to work burying my head in all sorts of weird and wonderful projects.
Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Probably when I was around 10 years old, when my Dad bought an 086 PC. I soon managed to borrow a copy of Skate or Die from a neighbour, and had to be forcibly removed days later.
Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
Hmmm, tough one. I’m a big fan of a lot of Rothko’s art – and at the moment my favourite website is this site from IKEA, Sweden. I’m not usually a fan of high bandwidth Flash sites, but this is so well executed it’s hard not to be impressed.
Marko: when you launched quo.com.au are you happy with the result of the site?
Yes. The site does all it needs to do at the moment, and it was completed fairly quickly. We have a redesign in the works, but of course that gets put on the back-burner while we work on client jobs.
Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this context)
Well I work such crazy hours I generally try and relax as much as I can. I enjoy hanging out with my girl, watching Arsenal play in the English Premier League, and drinking at the pub with my friends.
Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Hmmm, well at the moment I’m trying to get my hands on a beer I was drinking in Czech called Krusovice. I drank a lot of that while I was there. Turns out it’s pretty hard to track down in Australia.
Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Adam Morris?
Well I usually get up and eat Vegemite on toast, go for a stroll on the beach, and get into the office for 8.30am. Then I generally answer emails and make a few calls and then dive into work. I try and get out of the office for lunch as much as I can and eat with the boys at a cafe near our studio. Back to work (either designing in Photoshop or Illustrator, or coding in skEdit) and then a quick couple of beers on the way home with mates. When I get home I catch up with my girlfriend, maybe watch a movie and crash out. So nothing exciting, really!
Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
We’ve been really fortunate in the last couple of years in that nearly all of our work has been obtained through word of mouth. We get a few enquiries through our website, so some come from there, too.
Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
In no particular order; Rothko, Kandinsky, Starck, Le Corbusier, Sagmeister, k10k, Josh Davis, Group94, Todd Dominey, Spike Jonze, Johnny Cash, Bjšrk, Cat Power, The Who, Oval, Silver Jews, The Books, Mark Romanek and plenty of others I can’t think of right now.
Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
I taught myself how to use Photoshop and Freehand at school, and then I studied Multimedia at University. While I was at Uni I got a part time job as a Graphic Designer at a publishing company. After I graduated I went to London and scored a job with an advertising agency as a Web Designer and worked there for a couple of years before I came back to Australia and freelanced for while as an Art Director, and then started my own business doing Graphic and Web Design. Soon after I hooked up with a Creative Director and a programmer I’d worked with on various jobs and we started Quo.
Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
I’d like to think I’d have spent some more time studying and become an Architect.
Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
I think it’s a cool site.
Marko: If you could change something on mcville what would it be?
I’d probably pull the reflections back by about 10%, but then again I’m a particularly anal person.
Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Everything from hip-hop to country to metal to indie rock to noise and back again.
Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Saltimbocca (an Italian dish of baby veal and proscuitto sauteed in Marsala and butter, topped with fresh Sage)
Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Usually to a barbecue with friends or a pub.
some relaxing question to follow
Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Thai.
Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Coke.
Marko: html or css?
CSS.
Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
24.
Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Loads of design, CSS, music and shopping links.
Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Music, film, architecture, literature and nature (is that clichŽ enough for you?)
Marko: Thank again for having this interview Adam ,cya!
No problems Marko, my pleasure.
