Interivew with Dragan Babic at dnevnikeklektika.com
Marko: Bok Dragan !
Dragan: Hello! (Warning: shameless self-promotion ahead.)
Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Dragan: 23 years of age, I’m a beefcake. No, just kidding, I’m an interface designer from Novi Sad—Serbia and Montenergo.
Marko: How are you doing these days?
Dragan: Pretty good, been busy, work is flowing nicely and I’m not complaining. My main priority right now is our fresh veg/indie/DIY Web zine herbiv.org (pronounced like “herbivore”).
Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Dragan: I can’t recall actually, something like when I was around ten or eleven. It was an Amiga 500, then I upgraded it to a 500+ (which added 12kb of memory IIRC :). I’m not a computer guy, I just use it as much as I must—which is around 12 hours a day. Laptops are a blessing.
Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
Dragan: Artwork, hmmm, local streetart probably, anything found on the streets and free of artsy-let’s-label-everything bullshit. People who analyse artwork and talk about it should be shot in the head.
Website—there is no way I could name one in particular, and I don’t want to name the “big boys” here, they know who they are and what they are doing. There are so many people doing a great job designing websites nowadays, but I suck at remembering names. I mean just look at some of those galleries and the cssreboot sites, people are making beautifull websites!
Marko: when you launched dnevnikeklektika.com are you happy with the result of the site?
Dragan: In fact it was first called semperfi-1982.com – the diary of an eclectic, then I changed it into dnevnikeklektika.com (which translates into “the diary of an eclectic”). Yeah, it’s been fun ever since the beginning, it’s a playground for me mostly.
Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this context)
Dragan: I really like to go and catch a good concert, maybe take shoot photos I always talk about doing but never seem to.
Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Dragan: Vodka, straight, on the rocks if I’m on a night out. Else—beer probably, Jelen (domestic) and Warsteiner are my brands. I don’t drink as much though, or at least as much as I used to.
Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Dragan Babic ?
Dragan: When it’s a bussy period I wake up around 9-10ish, get to work and eat right after the morning coffee, work ‘till lunch (around 14:00), work a little more ‘till 17:00ish and then I take a little break. After that I either continue working untill like 19:00 or 20:00, or I go out and do something else with Jovana (my girl) and/or my dog Mala—she’s a Rascal Pitbull.
Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Dragan: Most work comes to me mostly, from previous clients or by recomendation, word of mouth basically.
Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Dragan: In terms of Web design? I honestly couldn’t answer that. But I tend to look to the underdogs for most ideas, I try to take all the things no one wanted to use, or have discarded, and I try embed them in my designs. I like to recycle and tend to force people to see that something “ugly” can also be beautifull when put into another context. I’d like to give some soul to websites which people consider “digital” and “lifeless”.
Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
Dragan: I have no background in design whatsoever. I just sit at my computer the whole day with my eyes closed, mess around and hope it ends up looking like a website.
Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Dragan: Doing something with wood probably. I love crafts and making stuff. I’m not any good at it though.
Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Dragan: It’s great, what can you say? Great job Marko. I like the footer thingy.
Marko: If you could change something on mcville what would it be?
Dragan: My mug in the header.
Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Dragan: Anything indie basically. Yage, Saetia, Nikad, Bambix, Risa Against, Sole(Anticon), Sage Francis, Hain Teny, 80’s stuff, I’m really into it now, stuff like Flock of Seagulls, The Human League, it’s comming back man. Pantera is my favorite band though, I’ve been listening to them since forever, they’re fried into my brain, I don’t even hear the music anymore. Also I enjoy Bill Hicks’ stand-up comedy, the guy was a genius.
At the moment I’m really into Rocky Votolato, As I Lay Dying, InFlames, Dead Prez and TTC. Well this is a real mashup, ‘innit? Music2.0.
Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Dragan: Probably Minestrone but my mom’s version, I’m vegetarian. And Jovana’s grandmom’s cheese pita. Mmmmm…
Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Dragan: I enjoy house parties and gettogethers with close friends I don’t get to see that often during the week. People will club themselves to death man.
some relaxing question to follow
Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Dragan: Huh?
Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Dragan: Neither.
Marko: html or css?
Dragan: CSS, give it up, yiaaah! (slaps self for even thinking about this joke)
Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Dragan: When I do watch, it’s Discovery or Animal Planet, but mostly it’s movies I watch over and over again. I have like 20 favorites and I rarely go out to see a new one.
Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Dragan: Apsolutely nothing. I am using Opera to get around the web nowadays (FF is my browser), since I waste too much time surfing websites when I should be getting work done, so I have no bookmarks-problem solved, call me radical-I don’t care.
Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Dragan: People around me, possibilities we have, things we can make/do together.
Marko: Thank again for having this interview Dragan, adio!
