Interview with Peter Hvid at producemedia.com
Marko: Heya Peter !
Peter: hey dood!
Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Peter: Well.. I’m 33 years old (ouch!) But I’m so immature you would never guess! I love music, snowboarding and sleeping.
Marko: How are you doing these days?
Peter: Great, I’m currently in the process of moving from New Zealand to London so things are a little hectic but exciting as well.
Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Peter: I only started this game 5 years ago, before that I was a chef for 13 years. While you might think these are two crazily different careers, they actually have a lot of similarities, both have long periods of boredom interspersed with short periods of stress, both careers have the need for artistic qualities mixed with technical know how and patients for dumb people, both careers drive you to drink until you pass out! (oops… did I say that?)
Marko: What is your favourite art work /website!?
Peter: Artwork would be stuff by: Mephisto Jones, The Yok, Banksy, Minigraff etc..
Websites: there are literally too many to list but, A list apart, netdiver, cssbeauty, stylegala are all sites I visit a lot.
Marko: when you launched producemedia.com are you happy with the result of the site?
Peter: I’m never really happy with my personal sites, I’m not sure how many versions of produceMedia I have built, I used to be a serial redesigner but I got help for that and now I just concentrate on client work.
Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this context)
Peter: Snowboard in the winter, listen to music, get drunk, you know! That sort of thing.
Marko: Do you have a favourite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Peter: Mohito:
3 fresh mint sprigs
2 tsp sugar
3 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 oz light rum
club soda
In a tall thin glass, crush part of the mint with a fork to coat the inside. Add the sugar and lemon juice and stir thoroughly. Top with ice. Add rum and mix. Top off with chilled club soda (or seltzer). Add a lemon slice and the remaining mint, and serve.
Also: Agavero Tequila Liquor is my favourite shot followed by a nice crisp beer or 5.
Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Peter Hvid ?
Peter: Collapse out of bed, crawl to the nearest coffee pot, scream “Why” and shake my fist at the heavens for making me have to work. Walk to the bus stop; run after the bus because I got there too late. Arrive at office, drink coffee, work, drink coffee, work, drink coffee, work, have lunch, drink coffee, work, drink coffee, work, drink coffee, work. Go home, have dinner, drink beer, more work, drink beer, work, drink beer, watch TV, stagger to bed, dream of $$$$ women and fast cars.
What a sad little life I have.
Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Peter: Word of mouth is my biggest source of clients, although I get around 5 – 10 email enquiries from my website every week, the majority of these are what I like to call “Tyre kickers” you know… they ask how much for this how much for that etc.. While remaining extremely vague about their “project”. And then you never hear from them again.
Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Peter: There are just to many to list properly, so many people blow me away with their creativity, With my other site www.res72.com I get to look at thousands of submissions every month and its really inspiring to see how different people approach this medium.
Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
Peter: As I mentioned above I was a chef before this so my development has only really just begun, I basically have come from being computer illiterate to where I’m at now in five years, I strive to learn something everyday, I guess broadening my skill set is what drives me. (and all the $$$ women and fast cars)
Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Peter: A bitter twisted chef who hates fat people!
Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Peter: Nice, it’s a great concept, and I think if you keep it up and keep developing it you’ll have a very successful site on your hands.
Marko: If you could change something on mcville what would it be?
Peter: Maybe just touch up some of the spelling (not that I can talk, without spell check I would sound like a retard)
Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Peter: We have a great music scene over here in Aotearoa (New Zealand) I recommend:
Salmonella Dub
Fat Freddy’s Drop
Trinityroots
Rhombus
If any of these guys play near you don’t miss them.
Marko: What’s your favourite food?
Peter: Hmm would have to be:
Roasted pesto crusted Rack of lamb on mashed potato with a drizzle of rosemary jus, as only my girlfriend can whip up.
Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Peter: When I’m in Wellington New Zealand, I usually go to Havana bar and chill out with some friends. As of next week I will be in London looking for a new local so let me know if you recommend any.
some relaxing question to follow
Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Peter: Definitely Thai
Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Peter: Coke, Pepsi is a crime against humanity
Marko: html or css?
Peter: CSS of course but it really depends on the job, a lot of clients don’t give a damn if their site validates or not. And the bottom line is that’s what I do, design for my clients and their target market.
Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favourite show?
Peter: I have become strangely addicted to LOST lately and keep this quite but I have a secret fetish for Survivor as well.
Marko: What would we find in your favourites bookmarks-bar?
Peter: I have literally zillions so many that I built a whole site to manage them for me. That’s how www.res72.com started basically as a list of my favourite resources and inspirational sites.
Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Peter: Standing on top of a mountain covered in fresh powder.
Marko: Thank again for having this interview Peter,Cheers!
Peter: No problem bro, thanks!
