Dat Nguyen Interview

Interivew with Dat Nguyen at splashyfish.com

Marko: Heya Dat :D !
Dat: Hello Marko.

Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Dat: I’m turning 25 this year and I have all the characteristics typical of little Californian boys this age. I enjoy going to pubs, concerts of semi-obscure bands, places with water, and indulge in escapes such as the Internet Super Highway, button mashing for larger numbers, and watching movies.

Marko: How are you doing these days?
Dat: Things are okay. I’m in that transitional phase between awesomeness and mediocrity so the sooner I get to awesomeness the better.

Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Dat: When I was a child, I used to go to the supermarket with my mom to buy chicken, parsley, onions, and rice because that’s all we ever ate. The cash registers always intrigued me, so I grew up to be 16 as fast as possible to get a working permit. I found work one summer at a discount chain and discovered that cash registers weren’t as glamourous as I had imagined. Despite my broken dream, I haven’t stopped pressing buttons since. Maybe one day I’ll be able to work at an Apple retail store to work their futuristic registers.

Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
Dat: The works of Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, and Alberto Giacometti excite me. For web designers, I like the many that came out of the Jeffrey Zeldman school and “newcomers” like Jason Csizmadi.

Marko: When you launched splashyfish.com were you happy with the result of the site?
Dat: Yes, I was very pleased with it and I know exactly what is needed to improve upon it; it just requires time and patience.

Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this context)
Dat: I like to watch movies that make your brain feel like grass jelly in sugary sweet milk.

Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Dat: Vodka and superfood, but not together although it could be interesting.

Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for you?
Dat: My typical day: I wake up when most people have worked half their day. The beef patty of the day is a life-API mash-up of reading the internet, working, making big numbers, doodling, and dining. At the end of the mash-up, I sleep when the early birds have gone to work.

Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Dat: I’ll let you know when I find out, but much of my work has come from recommendations.

Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Dat: The impressionist, the abstract expressionist, the French new wave, and modernist in general are the biggest influences. If I had to pick a who, it’d be Reggie Miller.

Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
Dat: My background is in fine arts, particularly painting and charcoal sketching, and print design. I’ve only stumbled upon website design recently because someone needed help with it and because I use it so much. As for what it was like, it’s comparable to waking up one summer day and licking mint and chip from an ice cream cone.

Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Dat: If I wasn’t a design type, I’d probably be one of those programmer that somehow slipped through the cracks of higher education. It would also be interesting to be an oceanographer to pet newly discovered fuzzy lobsters.

Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Dat: I enjoyed the interviews with some select designers.

Marko: If you could change something on mcville what would it be?
Dat: It needs more animated gifs.

Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Dat: Bands along the same lines as Arcade Fire, New Order, and Rilo Kiley.

Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Dat: Creative sushi, but a fruit smoothie can make your stomach smile.

Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Dat: Restaurants with tasty food and anywhere else around town when bugs hang out.

some relaxing question to follow

Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Dat: Thai unless it’s Dim Sum.

Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Dat: Pepsi in a can, Coke from a fountain.

Marko: HTML or CSS?
Dat: HTML at least has context.

Marko: What OS do you use?
Dat: OS X and Windows.

Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Dat: I don’t watch television, but I am entertained by The Colbert Report and Daily Show on Comedy Central owned by Viacom (which itself owns Neopets and a part of Sega) who was once a part of CBS which shows quality programming such as Clueless and U R The Girl.

Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Dat: Something useful like RSS feeds or something default depending on the browser flavor of the month which is currently Safari with Saft.

Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Dat: Bread bakers. There is so much they do to further their industry and make quality bread. So much of that Wickedly Cool Sucrose Powered Energy can be used for my diabolical plans for world peace.

Marko: Thank you for having this interview Dat, Cheers mate!
Dat: Anytime Marko. It has been a pleasure.
