David Lanham Interview

Interivew with David Lanham at dlanham.com

Marko: Hello David !
David: Hi Marko!

Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
David: I turned 25 years old last October and I’m currently living in Greensboro, NC. I spend most of my days working at The Iconfactory making all sorts of icons for all sorts of people. I also do a lot of art and illustration work while I’m at home, the majority of which is for myself, although I do manage to squeeze in some freelance illustration.

Marko: How are you doing these days?
David: I’m doing really well, quite busy, but overall I can’t complain one bit. I’m working on lot of exciting things that I’ve never dreamed I’d get to do.

Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
David: I think my first encounter was with either a Commodore at home or an Apple in elementary school, I was immediately hooked though.

Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
David: I absolutely love traditional artwork, show me anything by the old masters and I’m good to go. My personal favorites are drawings and sketchings, I’m a big fan of nice line work. As far as websites go, I tend to head towards the simple sites that are quick to navigate so I can get right into the content of what I’m looking for. I think there is a nice trend towards this lately, I’m really happy that (some) people are catching on.

Marko: When you launched dlanham.com are you happy with the result of the site?
David: Not at all, I think I’ve gone through about 3 or 4 revisions of the site in the last 2 years. I’m fairly happy with where it’s lead me as the site is now more functional and mostly compliant, but there is definitely room for improvement on both the code and the design.

Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this context)
David: I’m usually sketching or eating, or out with my girlfriend. I like traveling and seeing new places, even if it’s something that is close by.. there’s so much out there.

Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
David: I really like milk, juice is right up there too though, I’m always chugging it down. On the adult level, I quite enjoy sitting back with a cold glass of Guinness.

Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for you ?
David: I wake up around 8ish and check my mail, then it’s off to the shower. Breakfast and perusing news on the internet. I drive to work around 9:00-9:30 and make icons for the next 7 or 8 hours with a lunch in there somewhere. Once I get home, I’ll check mail again and get some exercise. Then I’ll just hang out or work on any projects or art that I currently have going on.

Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
David: Mostly just from word of mouth or internet exposure from my site or the Iconfactory site.

Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
David: Nature is definitely my biggest influence, the diversity of it all just never ceases to amaze me. I also get excited about doing my own work by looking at the things other artists are creating.

Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
David: I have mostly a traditional art background with some design knowledge from college, but web design is definitely a different beast. There are many elements that are intertwined, but the programming side of the web generally takes a different way of thinking. But it comes with practice and study just like everything else. I’ve definitely had to adapt my design skills to deal with designing for the internet, but it can be quite fun and almost like a big critical thinking project.

Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
David: When I was little I always wanted to be a scientist, so if I had no art skills then I probably would have headed in that direction.

Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
David: Since learning of the site, I’ve visited quite a bit reading up on the articles and interviews, I always seem to find something interesting here.

Marko: If you could change something on mcville what would it be?
David: The site definitely needs a mascot ^_-

Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
David: Anything with a good beat, but I generally gravitate toward more subdued styles or ones featuring female vocals and acoustic goodness.

Marko: What’s your favorite food?
David: Would have to be sushi, I could eat it every day if I was stranded on an island with a sushi chef.

Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
David: Just around town or go up to the mountains for some hiking.

some relaxing question to follow

Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
David: Thai is always tasty, although it’d be hard to compete with the Chinese I had in Italy, that’d be my favorite if it wasn’t so far away.

Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
David: If I HAD to pick, I guess it’d be Coke, but really the only carbonated drink I like is root beer.

Marko: HTML or CSS?
David: They kind of go hand in hand, but as far as layout is concerned, it’d be CSS all the way!

Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
David: I don’t watch much TV, but I do enjoy the HBO shows, cartoons (yay, Adult Swim!), and nature/social documentaries.

Marko:What OS do you use ?
David: I use Mac OSX.

Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
David: News sites, Mac customization sites, references, art sites, design sites, games, a few forums, and sites that I need for work realated tasks.

Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
David: Book covers are awesome, most of them are usually really well done. At least until they make a movie of it, then they slap the actors on the cover and get rid of all the pretty illustrations and design work.

Marko: Thank you for having this interview David ,Cheers!
David: Thank you, it was a lot of fun!
