Fernando Lins Interview

Interivew with Fernando Lins at devixdesign.com

Marko: Hello Fernando!
Fernando: Hey Marko!

Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Fernando: Well I’m 20 years old as of tomorrow (!), and I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Pretty much the average guy lost in a huge city, exploring everything.

Marko: How are you doing these days?
Fernando: Fine, thank you. A bit in a hurry with work and all, but very well.

Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Fernando: I think it was sometime back in 1993, at school, we used to play Prince Of Persia on our computer classes after working on Microsoft Word, I was 7, and I remember I loved playing that!

Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
Fernando: Uhm, that’s a tough one. I’ve been browsing Flickr.com and Threadless.com a lot lately, they inspire me a lot. But on the graphic design area I’d say TheRonin.co.uk is one of my current favorites, just love the whole site and artist’s style.

Marko: When you launched devixdesign.com are you happy with the result of the site?
Fernando: Back then I was, but I eventually got bored of it. Portfolio sites are always terrible to update, so I’ll be changing it into something a lot more simple. The usual unordered list of images, until I get time to do something good. I’ve grown tired of making websites, it’s too much work I guess.

Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this context)
Fernando: Humm, I draw a lot, and do a lot of shopping. I love buying new stuff. Sad, I know. But yeah, I guess drawing on paper or on the computer, reading books on graphic design and typography.

Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Fernando: Well, I don’t drink anything with alcohol, so I’m not sure it’d be a drink, but I love a brazilian soda called “Guaran‡”, it’s great. I think I drink it three or four times a week.

Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for you ?
Fernando: I wake up at around 9, eat my breakfast (toasts, bread, cereals, the ususal), then start working on client projects till about lunch time (13h / 1PM). If I’m done I’ll start studying till about 16h (4 PM), and then I’ll go out for some sunlight and exercise. When I come back an hour later I check for client e-mails and get ready to go to the university, where I study Graphic Design. 4 hours later I’m back home, like midnight, and I’m never sleepy, so I play some games on my computer or read something, eat, and off to bed at like 2 am.

Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Fernando: Mostly I nag people till they hire me. No, I’m kidding heh. Well, for my Icons I started out by making free icons for a few close friends who were starting on the mac software development area. When clients like the work I do for them they’ll talk about it to other people and the contacts list just grows, organically. So most of my clients are pure recommendation.

Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Fernando: To name a few studios and artists is pretty hard, but the first ones to come to my mind are Mike Cina and Mike Yound from WeWorkForThem/YouWorkForThem, The Designers Republic’s older stuff, BŸro Dstruct, Black June, Jonathan Ive, Adhemas, Nando Costa, Jemma Gura, Saul Bass, Muller, Nathan Nedorostek… the list goes on and on.

Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
Fernando: I started with web design at age 14, but it was just for fun, every now and then, until a canadian friend hired me to do his site as a freelancer. I spent the last 5 years doing mostly web design. In 2004 I moved into interface design, making icons for Mac OS X software which I still work with, and now I’m starting to work more in the illustration market, which along with branding are my favorites.

Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Fernando: A photographer or a musician, probably. Oh, and a bear, so I could hibernate!

Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Fernando: I like it a lot! Visually it’s pretty much my style, you know? Clean and dirty at the same time, very light. Content-wise it is great too, I’ve read some interviews there a while ago, they’re really fun. It’s great to get to know people and their projects.

Marko: If you could change something on mcville what would it be?
Fernando: Being a typography freak I’d say the logo needs some adjustments, but that’s just me being annoyingly critic. I’d say the site is perfect.

Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Fernando: Oh, I listen to a lot of stuff, but my favorite styles are Jazz, Bossa Nova, Samba, Drum & Bass and Trance. I hate folk music and funk!

Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Fernando: I’d say Yakisoba or the usual sunday pasta with tomato sauce, yummm!

Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Fernando: I usuallly go to the movie theater or to some calm bar to meet new people. Eating out is a must, I do it daily. Even though I can cook quite well I’m too laizy to do so daily.

some relaxing question to follow

Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Fernando: Chinese!

Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Fernando: Pepsi!

Marko: HTML or CSS?
Fernando: (X)HTML!

Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Fernando: I hardly ever watch TV.

Marko:What OS do you use ?
Fernando: Mac OS 10.4.7, Yes Sir!

Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Fernando: A list of RSS feeds to design-related sites, a folder for quick-access to web tools such as Flick, SideJobTrack, Box.net and other services, a folder with links to cool stuff I find around the web and a static link to Juno.co.uk’s latest music releases.

Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Fernando: Everyday things inspire me a lot. I get most ideas from stuff that happen in my life. Other than that I think music is an inspiration for all I do. It keeps me moving forward.

Marko: Thank you for having this interview m8 and keep doing that awesome work ,cya!
Fernando: Thank you! Laterzz..
