Filipe Varela Interview

Interivew with Filipe Varela at keoshi.com

Marko: Hello Filipe !
Filipe: Hey Marko!

Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Filipe: I’m a 22 year old Freelance Web and Graphic Designer from Portugal.

Marko: How are you doing these days?
Filipe: Very well, thanks. A bit busy with some projects but hey, that’s what keeps us running :)

Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Filipe: Uh, looong time ago, on my first computer – an IBM 386. My grandfather and my father always worked with computers so I kinda grew with them. Back in the day I would play around with Microsoft Creative Writer and Fine Artist all day.

Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
Filipe: I don’t have just one favorite but on top of my list are iso50.com, netdiver and flickr.

Marko: When you launched keoshi.com are you happy with the result of the site?
Filipe: Couldn’t be otherwise. That’s why I took 2 years to design it. I like it very much, indeed (with an ocasional update, of course eheh).

Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this context)
Filipe: I’m into photography (keoshi.net), but I also like to watch a good movie, listen to a good album with nothing else bothering me and go out with my girlfriend. Other than that, I work on some personal projects and draw.

Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Filipe: Not really… Probably water or coke. I like both on different ocasions.

Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for you ?
Filipe: I’m studying Communication Design so I usually have a normal day: wake up early and attend to all classes; when I’m done I return back home and start working on my client’s projects. When I’m done with school and work I watch a movie or wander around the net. My day is never over before 2am.

Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Filipe: I started doing some blog engine templates for fun, when I got my first contact. You start to build up your name, your reputation and all of a sudden you don’t have to find clients, they’ll come to you. “Word of mouth” is still the best publicity.

Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Filipe: My family and girlfriend. Nature and music too. Oh, and of course: Japanese culture.

Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
Filipe: I always was interested in design, always had this passion to express feelings and ideas through imagery. I started doing some web design when I was 15 – this naturally grew on me from there.

Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Filipe: Mad cientist or photographer.

Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Filipe: I have to confess I watch it from time to time and I’m always surprised by the rich interviews and great artists you find here. By the way, this one is going straight to the ‘not-so-interesting-interviews’. hehe

Marko: If you could change something on mcville what would it be?
Filipe: I can be too much of a perfectionist – I would change the header (mainly the type face on the logo) and the upper left menu so something tighter.

Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Filipe: Jazzy, lounge-time music. Though I listen to all genres. And I mean all.

Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Filipe: Japanese.

Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Filipe: When I go out, I usually go to a quiet bar with good music with a couple of friends.

some relaxing question to follow

Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Filipe: Thai. (or Japanese if it was an option)

Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Filipe: Pepsi.

Marko: HTML or CSS?
Filipe: More exactly, xHTML and CSS can’t live without one another – but it’s on CSS that the fun begins. :)

Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Filipe: Not much to tell you the truth. Anyway, my favorite show off all times has got to be ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’

Marko:What OS do you use ?
Filipe: Windows XP. Don’t have money for a Mac (yet!).

Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Filipe: Flickr, some online stores, art blogs, Digg and of course, photoblogs.

Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Filipe: Nature and music, in general.

Marko: Thank you for having this interview m8 ,cya!
Filipe: Cheers, mate!
