Interview with Stacey Cordoni at utopiadesigns.ca
Marko: Hello Stacey !
Stacey: Hey Marko!
Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Stacey: I’m a 21 year-old freelance web designer/developer, and graphic designer from Vancouver, BC, Canada. Most of what I know is from my huge interest in everything web site related, but I am also finishing up a Web Technologies course, which I will graduate from in January.
Marko: How are you doing these days?
Stacey: I’m doing quite well and keeping very busy. I’m moving at the end of the month so right now most of my time is spent packing boxes and preparing for the move.
Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Stacey: My father works as an Information Technologist so I’ve always been around computers. I started using the internet when I was 11 years-old and it was then my interest in building web sites began. My sister taught me the basics of HTML 4.01 and from there I built my first web site. I haven’t stopped since.
Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
Stacey: I have a huge interest in vector art (it is also a hobby of mine). A lot of great work from a variety of artists can be seen on deviantART.
Marko: When you launched utopiadesigns.ca are you happy with the result of the site?
Stacey: I’m hoping to be (it’s not fully launched right now). I’m just finishing off my portfolio pages and once that is done, it will be up and running. I intend to have this done by the middle of October.
Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this context)
Stacey: I love watching movies either at home or at the theater, listening to music, and spending time with my friends and family. If I’ve got a lot of time to spare and it’s raining out or I don’t have much else to do, I love making vector art. Creating vectors is a hobby I started nearly three years ago. I don’t do it as much as when I first started because I don’t have the time, but it’s still something I love to do when I can.
Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Stacey: Someone recently re-introduced me to Diet Dr. Pepper and my love for it has rekindled. It doesn’t taste like Diet at all! I drink too much of it.
Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for you ?
Stacey: I usually wake up around 8am and I take a shower and get ready. After, I check my e-mail and respond to client and other e-mails. Then I start working on projects I need to finish and at 12:30pm I take a break and make myself some lunch. I continue working throughout the day until about 5:30pm and then I’ll cook some dinner. After dinner I either hang out, watch television or a movie with my roommate or continue working on the computer if I have a lot more to do. Later I’ll re-check my e-mail and reply to my clients and whomever else. Before bed I either read, watch television, or play on my Nintendo DS. Some days I’ll work in the evening, or work around certain things I want to get done during the day. Right now, since I’m packing, most of my computer work is done in the evening.
Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Stacey: At first it was hard, but after getting a few clients with them passing on a good word, I started getting more clients. When times are slow I will head over to getafreelancer.com and bid on a few jobs.
Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Stacey: Some of my biggest influences are: music, the media, emotions, friends and family.
Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
Stacey: I started web designing first with creating a few graphics here and there. My interest in vector art really introduced me to the tools in Photoshop and Illustrator and from that I became more comfortable designing logos, posters, etc.
Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Stacey: Probably a professional organizer (yes, it’s a job!) I’m a little obsessive when it comes to organization and cleanliness, so it would only seem fit.
Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Stacey: I think it’s awesome! The variety of designers interviewed is great. I love reading the interviews because they’re not people who I hear of daily, but are still great designers and deserve the recognition.
Marko: If you could change something on mcville what would it be?
Stacey: I think a hint of contrasting colour here and there could really liven the page.
Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Stacey: I’m a fan of a lot of genres, but I mainly listen to pop, soft rock, r&b and country.
Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Stacey: I love anything Italian.
Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Stacey: Saturday is usually the day I spend with friends and family. We all get together and have a nice dinner and afterward we may play a game or two. Later on I’ll go to the theater with my friends to watch a movie or rent one to watch at home.
some relaxing question to follow
Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Stacey: Chinese.
Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Stacey: Coke.
Marko: HTML or CSS?
Stacey: CSS.
Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Stacey: Even though it’s over, I still love Friends. I love watching Dateline and 20/20 as well.
Marko:What OS do you use ?
Stacey: Windows XP. I’m saving up for a Mac!
Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Stacey: A riduculous amount of bookmarks! I bookmark web sites I find useful, funny, informative, or well-designed. I have 20 folders (school, shopping, community, funny, resources, etc.) and endless amounts of bookmarks inside each.
Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Stacey: Making a career out of having fun. I didn’t want to have to settle for less, and I didn’t. Having fun and doing what I love inspires me each day.
Marko: Thank you for having this interview Stacey!
Stacey: And thank you, Marko!
