Interview with Ryan King at theryanking.com
Marko: Heya Ryan! :D !
Ryan: Hi Marko.
Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Ryan: I’m a 24 years old. I live in San Francisco, where I’m working on a Masters’ degree in Internet Engineering at the University of San Francisco. I also work for Technorati on microformats.org.
Marko: How are you doing these days?
Ryan: Very well. There are lots of interesting projects for me to work on and I’m almost done with school, both of which are very exciting.
Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Ryan: In elementary school we had Apple IIe’s that we used for educational games (like Oregon Trail). Later we got a Mac LC III at home.
Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
Ryan: I’ve recently discovered an artist that does art work based on computation. Check him out at complexification.net. I find it very intriguing because these beautiful patterns emerge out of simple operations.
Marko: When you launched theryanking.com are you happy with the result of the site?
Ryan: I’m happy with it. It’s changed a lot over the 3 years I’ve had it. I feel like it was more interesting back before I had an audience. Back then I felt much more comfortable writing about anything and didn’t worry about staying on topic.
Marko: What do you do in your spare time ?
Ryan: When I get a chance, I try to enjoy the great outdoors. Living in Northern California, there is an embarrassing abundance of natural beauty. I also really enjoy going to see live music. I usually see at least a couple of shows per week.
Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Ryan: I’m usually a beer drinker. Lately I’ve really been enjoying Belgian style beers (tripels especially). I usually go out for some beer a few times a week.
Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for you ?
Ryan: I usually wake up late, rush to the office (at Technorati) on my bike. Work until about 4pm, then leave to get to school around 5 for class at 5:30. After class lets out I usually either go to see a live show or to the pub to hang out with friends.
Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Ryan: I’m currently working just with Technorati. I’ve done freelance work in the past, but not really anymore.
Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Ryan: That’s a tough question. Work-wise I’m definitely influenced a lot by my co-workers. Outside of that Tim Bray has always been a big influence on me as a technologist.
Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
Ryan: No, my background is in Computer Science. I’m not really a designer.
Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Ryan: Well, I’d like to be a drummer in an indie rock band, but I doubt that’d ever happen.
Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Ryan: I’ve only just found out about it, but it has a smooth design and seems intriguing.
Marko: If you could change something on mcville what would it be?
Ryan: Dunno. I don’t know it well enough.
Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Ryan: I listen mostly to indie rock, roots rock and Scandinavian operatic art rock (I just made that one up).
Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Ryan: I love American Barbeque. I grew up in Kansas City, which has a lot of BBQ restaurants.
Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Ryan: Saturdays are usually pretty calm for me. If the weather’s good I’ll usually end up at the park hanging out with friends.
some relaxing question to follow
Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Ryan: Thai.
Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Ryan: Neither- they’re both too sweet.
Marko: HTML or CSS?
Ryan: HTML.
Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Ryan: If downloading shows through BitTorrent counts, then yes. My favorite right now is Battlestar Galactica.
Marko:What OS do you use ?
Ryan: Mac OS X.
Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Ryan: Nothing much. Just a few internal links at Technorati.
Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Ryan: I’m most often inspired by simple things. Lately I’ve gotten a chance to do a lot of programming in Ruby. It’s a very advanced language which allows me to write very powerful code. Yet the language is conceptually rather simple.
Marko: Thank you for having this interview mate ,cya!
Ryan: No problems, I was glad to do it.
