Jeffrey Kalmikoff Interview

Interview with Jeffrey Kalmikoff skinnyCorp / Threadless

Marko: Heya Jeffrey!
For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Jeffrey: I’m your average 27-year-old tattooed metal-head with an eye for design and nose for tomfoolery. Any time not spent with my fiance and small family of cats (named Murder, Mick Mars and Alabama) is spent as partner and Chief Creative Officer of the Chicago-based, community-business-centric skinnyCorp.

How are you doing these days?
Jeffrey: I’m fine, thanks for asking.

When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Jeffrey: When my mom married my step-dad, he had a Tandy 486. I loved to play around in Print Shop and to play Carmen Sandiego.

What is your favorite art work /website!?
Jeffrey: I’m really inspired by industrial design these days. I think www.betterlivingthroughdesign.com is a great site. I also love Threadless!

When you launched your projects like threadless,YayHooray!,..are you happy with the result of those projects?
Jeffrey: I’d say I’m always happy with the projects, but never satisfied. That’s what inspires us to make them better all the time!

What do you do in your spare time?
Jeffrey: I like to read autobiographies and watch movies. I also like spending time with my cats and my future wife.

Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Jeffrey: My favorite drink is sparkling water. I drink a ton of it. As for alcohol, I like to drink Jack Daniels, but I don’t drink very much of that at all. I’m a lightweight.

Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for you ?
Jeffrey: That’s hard, because my days are rarely typical. For the most part, I do a bunch of design, play a lot of ping pong, have a lot of meetings, and drink a lot of water.

I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Jeffrey: Well, I don’t freelance, so that’s a hard question to answer.

Who are some of your biggest influences?
Jeffrey: There aren’t specific people, but I get hugely influenced by architecture, industrial design, etc. I love construction and the idea of completing projects. This may sound weird, but I get inspired by making lists of things to do and not stopping until my list is complete. Maybe that’s a little obsessive haha.

Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
Jeffrey: I started out as a print designer. In 2001 I put up a portfolio website for my print work and the site itself got more attention than the work on it did. From there I started designing sites.

If you were not a designer what would you be?
Jeffrey: A chef. No question.

How do you like our site mcville.net?
Jeffrey: I like it a lot!

If you could change something on mcville what would it be?
Jeffrey: Hmmm… I’m not sure. I’ll have to get back at you about that.

What kind of music do you fancy?
Jeffrey: I’m a total metalhead. I love death metal and black metal. Oddly, I also like dance music a lot. I guess my taste is all over the place.

What’s your favorite food?
Jeffrey: I could live on sushi and thai food, as long as I could have the occasional grilled cheese sandwich.

Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Jeffrey: I don’t go out very much. But when I do I like to go whereever there are the least amount of douchebags! :)

Thank you for your time Jeffrey ,cheers!
