Zach Inglis Interview

Interview with Zach Inglis from lt3media.com

Marko: Hey Zach !
Zach: Hey, Marko!

Marko: For our reader’s could you tell us something about yourself? (years old and other stuff)?
Zach: I’m in my early twenties. I live in America with my fiancé , but I’m a Brit. I am self-employed and am both a web designer(Photoshop) and web development(Ruby On Rails). I’ve been in this business for almost 9 years now, although most people do not believe it due to my age.

Marko: How are you doing these days?
Zach: I’m fine thank you, just a bit tired. Comes with the job.

Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Zach: I can’t remember: was either Civilization 1, my brother’s Atari ST or maybe my friend’s Spectrum. My memory is useless, I can recognize a 2-bit actor in a movie, but when it comes to what I had for supper or the first time I played with a computer, I’m stumped.

Marko: What is your favorite art work/website!?
Zach: My favourite non-digital art is the work of Glaswegian, Avril Paton. As for digital, I really like Mac OS X icons that are done well, but have no favourite. I’m sure I’ll think of a better answer once I have submitted this to you.

Marko: When you launched lt3media.com were you happy with the results?
Zach: Yes, It took me some effort. As a designer I’ll slowly grow tired of it. As I continually evolve, I’ll likely see faults.

Marko: What do you do in your spare time ?
Zach: There is such thing as free time in this business? Damn, I haven’t seen that yet. Ok, well the time that I am not spending working, learning, contributing to one of my working groups (mostly accessibility related), contributing to open-source or giving opinions… I am spending time with my lovely fiancé, gaming or watching a movie or TV show. I’m very into those things.

Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Zach: My favourite non-alcoholic drink is Coke but if you see me about at conferences, mine’s a Jack and Coke.

Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for you ?
Zach: In my world, there is no typical day. Depending on what time I went to bed the night before (11pm-11am) I’ll get up sometime later. I’ll then check my email, my Mint/Google Analytics (for the sites I haven’t yet got around to purchasing Mint for), check my podcasts (which are half and half of funnies and half are work related), watch a few of them. I’ll then stick on a TV show or movie (a lighter one) and start work.

Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Zach: Usually through referrals of friends or working with agencies.

Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Zach:I am a huge fan of Cameron Moll. I also have an affinity for many
designers strong in grid design. Outside the web, I take a lot from
movies. You generally can’t see it in my work, but they put me in
different moods and those moods are what produce my design.

Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
Zach: I always wanted to do design but I started out programming so that I could earn a living and learn about designing on the side. Slowly I have got to a standard that I really like.

Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Zach: That’s a hard question although I’ve considered it alot. I quite like the idea of being in the film business like my father and his before him.

Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Zach: I dig the colours and love the strength of the people you’ve interviewed. One thing though? You said mcville is not pronounced McVille in your about section, so how is it pronounced?

Marko: It’s like this :) -> “em see ville”

Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Zach: I like rock and metal, pretty generic but I will never turn my nose up at anything because it belongs to a genre. I like older bands like Suede and James. But then I like newer stuff like Linkin Park (I love the song ‘Morning After’, Julien K remix featuring Chester Bennington a LOT). I love Frou Frou (Imogen Heap’s electronica band), No Doubt, The Fray, Snow Patrol, Fall Out Boy, and the list goes on.

Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Zach: Now we’re talking my favourite language. I recently discovered a love for Mexican, with the move. I also love Asian food, the real stuff rather than that you’d find in a take-away. Sushi particularly.

Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Zach: I have to admit, my weekends are usually followed the same as my normal days. If I go anywhere, it won’t be far. To the bowling alley or such.

some relaxing question to follow

Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Zach: I’m glad you said food there, or else I’d be suspicious of your perversion (my fiancé is Chinese). But definitely Chinese. Last time I had Thai was in Asia, they saw the whitey coming and made it extra spicy. Even my fiancé found it hot and this is a girl who can literally eat any spice without sweating.

Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Zach: Coke. No contest. Little Nicky has the best comedy on this when he changes the Coke into Pepsi as an evil.

Marko: HTML or CSS?
Zach: Hey, no fair! Two seperate unsimilair languages. CSS, I guess. It’s the language that makes ugly XHTML pretty.

Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Zach: My favourite show by far is Heroes. I did
create a whole lost-
theories.com
style website for it but left it alone when I
realised I didn’t want to moderate such a website.

Marko: What OS do you use ?

Zach: Mac OS X on my laptop and my main machine runs Windows so I can game on it. I mainly use it for watching TV (it has a TV tuner card in it) or movies.

Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Zach: checks Rails Documentation, Reverse Dicitionary and then a bunch of links that I need to check. They’re there so I remember.

Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Zach: See influences question.

Marko: Thank you for having this interview m8,cheers!

Zach: Cheers. I’m very honoured to be on this list with such great talent. It’s nice to hear Cheers nowadays, I don’t so much anymore. No one in America says it.

Marko: ;D

    Wow, great info, great interview!

btw, Zach. i say it often, but you’re right, there’s not really anything that matches it’s optimism in American use.

    Cheers!
    Luke
