Bastiaan Terhorst Interview

Interivew with Bastiaan Terhorst at vivified.net

Marko: Heya Bastiaan !

Bastiaan: Hey!

Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Bastiaan: I’m 22 years old, living in Rotterdam, The Netherlands with my girlfriend and two lovely cats.

I study animation at the Willem de Kooning Academy, and am currently in my final year.

Marko: How are you doing these days?

Bastiaan: Allright, although sometimes it’s a bit of a struggle combining my art studies with a part-time job,
a lot of rock climbing and the occasional freelance gig.

Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Bastiaan: I guess I must have been 12 or 13, playing Doom and Rise of the Triad. Those were the days :)

Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
Bastiaan: It’s a tie between Mondriaan’s “Broadway Boogie Woogie” and “Le Merle”, a cutout animation made in 1958 by Norman McLaren.
As for websites, I really like Firewheel Design (www.firewheeldesign.com), and Khoi Vinh’s Subtraction (www.subtraction.com).
Also, my friend Paco Vink (www.pacomania.com), has some great stuff on his website.

Marko: when you launched vivified.net are you happy with the result of the site?
Bastiaan: Definitely, it’s how I got my current part-time job at Netbytes (www.netbytes.nl).
They saw the site on cssvault and contacted me, I’ve been working there for about 5 months now.

Marko: What do you do in your spare time (I do realize that spare time, in this context, is pretty relative)?
Bastiaan: I do quite a bit of rock climbing. Oh, and I play the harmonica :)

Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Bastiaan: I enjoy a good cappuccino in the morning, and a friendly Bordeaux at night.

Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Bastiaan Terhorst?
Bastiaan: Get up at half seven. Make some uberstrong coffee. Then I either go to the office, to uni, or I stay
at home. Either way, I work my ass off ‘till about half five. Then I do some shopping, and feed my cats.

Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Bastiaan: So far, most of the work has come to me.
Apart from that, it’s a matter of getting off your ass and talking to the right people.
Social skills, and being in the right circles, are half the battle.

Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Bastiaan: ‘Who’ is a difficult one. Some things that influence and inspire me are book covers (especially old ones), typography, wallpaper
patterns, old maps and architecture.

Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like? How did that take place and why?
Bastiaan: My background is in animation, and while my school offers a graphic design course I never took any classes, which is too bad really.
I’ve always been designing on my own though, next to my animation projects. I think I like the web because it is such an accessible
platform. Anyone can make a website and put it up for the world to see. This is what initially appealed to me. On top of that is
the interactive experience, and the possibilities for video and animation.

Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Bastiaan: Miserable

Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Bastiaan: I really like reading all those interviews with the people I look up to :)

Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Bastiaan: I like a lot. Some artists that come to mind are Sigur R—s, Ladytron, Chick Corea, Badly Drawn Boy, Eels, Pat Metheny and Van Morrison.
I also have a slightly embarrassing taste for 80’s musicĐ especially Phil Collins.

Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Bastiaan: I spent some time in the UK recently, and their Sunday Roasts are amazing.

Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Bastiaan: I don’t care much for clubs, but a concert, movie or nice restaurant is always good.

some relaxing question to follow

Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Bastiaan: Thai. I dig fish.

Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Bastiaan: I’ll have a tonic, thank you.

Marko: html or css?
Bastiaan: css.

Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Bastiaan: Hardly. I do enjoy watching a movie with my three girls.

Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Bastiaan: Backpack, and a truckload of designer’s sites. I read blogs in a newsreader.

Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Bastiaan: Bob Ross, Industrial places, food.

Marko: Thank again for having this interview, cheers m8!
Bastiaan: Thank you!
