Interivew with Cody Lindley at codylindley.com
Marko: Hello Cody !
Lindley: Good day!
Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Lindley: Well, I’m 29 years old, I live in Boise Idaho, and I’m married with my first child on the way. I work for Albertson as a web developer and when I’m not sitting on my butt in front of a computer I try to lead an active life style.
Marko: How are you doing these days?
Lindley: In a word, fantastic. Professionally and personally I have absolutely nothing to gripe about. Of course, I face the same obstacles that we all do (stress, not enough time, browser quirks) but I really feel very fortunate to be who I am (thanks, Mom), and where I am at both professionally and personally.
Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Lindley: In the 1980’s my step-father brought home a commodore Colt personal computer. I believe it was running CMOS. For some reason the dot matrix printer remains more memorable to me today then the computer. Anyways, I was only allowed to look at the Colt computer, touching it was out of the question. It wasn’t until a couple years later that I inherited the Colt. My step-father upgraded, which meant Cody encountered his first computer. Today it’s strange to think that it didn’t even have a mouse. So there you have it, large floppy disks and the DOS prompt.
Marko: What is your favorite art work/website!?
Lindley: Man, that is indeed a tough question. I guess Photography is my favorite form of art work. As for a favorite website, today I’m thinking it will be yours. Yup, maratz.com. Good thing you caught me on a Thursday, most days I simply dislike all websites.
Marko: when you launched codylindley.com are you happy with the result of the site?
Lindley: No, I’m never really happy with my work. I guess that is what keeps me at it. I push stuff out when I know that I have given it my best, not necessary when I’m happy with. Plus, I’m usually more pleased with the small victory’s (the journey) during development then the end results. I guess that is why I have not jumped on the re-design my site every couple of month’s bandwagon. I like molding perfection, instead of creating it. Molding is more about passion then being completely content. My site in my opinion is still in the process of being launched.
Marko: What do you do in your spare time (I do realize that spare time, in this context, is pretty relative)?
Lindley: If for some ridiculous reason I feel the urge to sit idle outside of work I am usually reading, watching a movie, working on freelance stuff, or playing xbox. When I have large amounts of spare time available to me I am likely too pursue my outdoor passions (hiking, climbing, snow sports, and biking).
Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Lindley: My favorite drink is a cup of half regular, half decaffeinated, coffee. I try and limit myself to 12 ounces a day. Too much caffeine makes me shaky, I hate that. A close second would be a cold micro beer from the tap. I try and limit my alcohol intake to one or two drinks a day.
Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Cody Lindley?
Lindley: Ideally a typical (Mon-Fri) day starts by rising early and either working out, reading, or praying. After that it’s off to work. When I get to work I grab a cup of coffee and spend a small portion of each of my mornings reading web blogs. After that I work until about 11:30 and then head off to lunch. Upon returning from lunch I work until five and then head home. Once I am home my wife and I make dinner together, relax, and then head off to bed to do it all over again the next day.
Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Lindley: I think there are a lot of ways to get work. I believe however that it all starts with output quality. Output the highest quality of work you can, as consistently as you can. Sprinkle some experience and a solid skill set on top of that, and well, you won’t have to get work, work will come you.
Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Lindley: Well, since I am a Christian my biggest influence is Christ. It’s his presents in my life that has had the greatest influence on all of my actions and thoughts both professionally and personally. Next I believe it would be my family and close friends. Any influences outside of these I am a little weary of.
Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like? How did that take place and why?
Lindley: My background is rooted in web design, not necessarily design. Today I would say it was rooted in web development & visual design for text based and application based websites. For me there was no progression. I got on the wagon when it took off. In other words, I started thinking about the web when the web started thinking about itself. I started using html, javascript, photoshop, and flash 3 about 7 years ago.
Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Lindley: Good Question. I have no idea. I wish I could be a full-time student or possibly a teacher/professor. I guess I have never really thought another profession was more appealing then my current. But since you asked I’ll settle on a full-time theologian at a public University.
Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Lindley: I like is just fine.
Marko: O it’s really that bad? :)
Lindley: No, I just don’t think the website knows if it likes itself yet. Therefore its difficult to really have an opinion.
Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Lindley: All kinds, I just never know what might fancy my ears.
Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Lindley: Italian, If I had to pick just one.
Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Lindley: I usually try and make it to the barber shop and possible on a bike ride or hike in the foothills. After that I spend a great deal of time just running errands around town or working around the house.
some relaxing question to follow
Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Lindley: For sure, Thai.
Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Lindley: I don’t drink pop. It has way to much sugar. Burns my throat and coats my teeth with sugar. Not what I call refreshing.
Marko: html or asp?
Lindley: Neither, especially ASP! Give me death before ASP! Can I have me some xhtml?
Marko: yeah sure m8 ;)
Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Lindley: I try not to watch live television. I prefer DVD box sets, or Tivo. I hate wasting my time watching commercials. I recently watch the entire first season of Firefly (14hrs) at leisurely pace of two days. My Tivo typically records the Apprentice and various shows on Tech Tv like screen savers.
Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Lindley: Not sure, I don’t have one. I’m way too organized for that general of a category.
Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Lindley: People, thoughts, books, photography, God, Christ, My Wife, My Family, video games, movies, the bible, C.S. Lewis, manual labor, writing, debate, laughing, friends, foes, and food.
Marko: Thank again for having this interview, cheers m8!
Lindley: Thank you.
