Keith Robinson Interview

Interivew with Keith Robinson at dkeithrobinson.com

Marko: Hello Keith !

Keith: Hey, what’s up?

Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)

Keith: I’m older than some people, I live in Seattle and I’m Creative Director and founder of Blue Flavor, an experience design company.

Marko: How are you doing these days?

Keith: Whew, pretty good for the most part. I’ve been working a bit more than I’d like, but that’s par for the course with a new company.

Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?

Wow, a long time ago. I mean we’ve had computers in my family since I was a kid. I remember, when I was in High School, I had a Commodore 64 and my dad had one of the original Apple Macs. Oh, and at the same time I was learning to type on an old typewriter at school. How’s that for old skool?

Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?

Keith: To be quite honest I’m a bigger fan of analog art than digital. I love the work of Dave McKean and have really been enjoying Tony DiTerlizzi’s work. Among many others. I don’t really have a favorite.

Marko: when you launched dkeithrobinson.com are you happy with the result of the site?

Keith: Well, I launched 7nights.com (7nights.com is the same) back in about 1997 or so. It’s been through many changes, the latest of which I’m very, very happy with.

Marko: What do you do in your spare time (I do realize that spare time, in this context, is pretty relative)?

Keith: Right now? Sleep. But usually I love to read, play sports, go to shows. I’m a big fan of leisure travel and hope to have more time to explore the world soon.

Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?

Keith: Water. I drink lots and lots.

Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Keith Robinson?

Keith: Hmm, ok. Well I get up and head to the computer right away to sort my e-mail, delete my spam and plan my day. I usually respond to anything pressing and then get ready for my day. I’ll then either head down to the office, or if I’ve got something I really need to focus on I’ll stay at home and work on it. Lately I’ve been having all sorts of meetings, so I’ll do one or more of those. I reserve my afternoons for writing and things like this interview! ;0)

Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?

Keith: Well I work hard and make sure people know it. I don’t try to go overboard with self promotion, but I do try and get myself out there. As well, having a good network really helps. If you’ve got friends in the industry you work in, it really helps.

Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?

Keith: Well as many Web designers and developers I count Zeldman as an influence. I’d add to the professional list Peter Morville, Doug Bowman, Josh Davis, Jim Coudal…I could go on. Out side of work I’m a big fan of Ted Leo, Neil Gaiman, Tim Burton…

Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like? How did that take place and why?

Keith: My background is in Web. I went from nothing straight into Web design and development. When I started there were no classes you could take and very few books. I learned by lots of trial and error.

Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?

Keith: Unemployed most likely.

Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?

Keith: I like it quite a bit. Love the black and white.

Marko: O it’s really that bad? ( :)

Keith: Well if you want to know the truth…just kidding.

Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?

Keith: I don’t “fancy” any kind of music. I’m not that kind of boy. No, I don’t know, I like many kinds of music from metal to jazz to indie rock. I’ve never been much for genre separation. Music is music.

Marko: What’s your favorite food?

Keith: Avocado Egg-rolls.

Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?

Keith: Well, to shows usually. This weekend I’m going to catch Ben Lee. That should be great.

some relaxing question to follow

Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?

Keith: Thai! 5 stars!

Marko: Coke or Pepsi?

Keith: Dr. Pepper

Marko: html or css?

Keith: CSS

Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?

Keith: I watch a little. Deadwood is my favorite right now. Oh and Invader Zim!

Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?

Keith: Lots of porn. Oh and CSS tutorials.

Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.

Keith: A good story.

Marko: Thank again for having this interview, cheers m8!

Keith: My pleasure!

  1. Uffe    Nov 16, 11:24 AM    # So why is it that you ask ‘html or asp’? HTML is markup and ASP is old school server-side scripting. You can’t prefer one over the other because they are totally different things. So that question makes absolutely no sense.
  2. Marko    Nov 16, 01:43 PM    # Yeah the thing is that for the programmers I ask that but for designers I ask html vs css or Flash . I’d better be more carefull in the future ;)
  3. Keith    Nov 16, 04:50 PM    # Wait a minute! I’m much more a designer than programmer! ;0)

    My answer would be “CSS”.
