Ed merritt Interview

Interivew with Ed Merritt at edmerritt.com

Marko: yellow Ed ;)!
Ed: Hello Marko.

Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)

Ed: Dislocating a hip is the most painful thing I’ve ever done.

Marko: How are you doing these days?
Ed: Bordering on insanely busy.

Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?

Ed: An Acorn BBC Model B+ when I was about 7.

Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?

Ed: I love the work of Edward Hopper, Patrick Caulfield, Barbara Hepworth and lots more…

Marko: when you launched edmerritt.com are you happy with the result of the site?

Ed: I think any project you do for yourself is doomed, because it’s always a compromise reached from all the ideas you wanted to include. This leaves a load of ideas on the shelf which, as time goes by, you’re bound to think would have been better than the solution you opted for.

Marko: What do you do in your spare time (I do realize that spare time, in this context, is pretty relative)?

Ed: Watch films, drink beer… When you work for yourself, work is always at the back of your mind though.

Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?

Ed: It’s a close call between strong black coffee and a nice glass of scotch. I probably drink too much of both.

Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Ed Merritt?

Ed: Get up, drink coffee, line up some films for the day, work, more coffee, more work etc.

Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Ed: I’ve no idea. I’ve never advertised, but have been busy since I started working for myself over a year ago. I think being clear with clients about the brief, cost and timescale avoids unpleasant surprises and leads to plenty of referrals.

Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?

Ed: The guys at Cuban Council, Pixelsurgeon, Craig Robinson, Thomas Brodahl, Shaun Inman. I also find the number of Brits doing excellent work inspiring, people like Jon Hicks, Andy Clarke, Andy Budd and John Oxton.

Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like? How did that take place and why?

Ed: I was about to start a degree in architecture when I took a random change of direction and did Multimedia instead. Halfway through the course I realised I had a lot of spare time and took a job as a web designer (for a rival college) 3 days a week. I stayed there for 3 years after graduating, then last year decided to go freelance.

Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?

Ed: I’d love to be involved in films.

Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?

Ed: Clear and to the point – it works well.

Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?

Ed: I listen to a lot of classics such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. More recent stuff I enjoy includes Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Lost Prophets and The Killers.

Marko: What’s your favorite food?

Ed: Moules Mariniere with good bread.

Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?

Ed: Down the local, I’m a quiet pub kind of guy.

some relaxing question to follow

Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?

Ed: Chinese

Marko: Coke or Pepsi?

Ed: Diet Coke

Marko: html or asp?

Ed: HTML

Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?

Ed: I don’t watch much TV, but I love films and usually have them playing in the background while I work. ‘Spooks’ has been the only thing worth watching on TV in the UK for quite a while.

Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?

Ed: A complete mess of links that I really should organise.

Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.

Ed: Colour.

Marko: Thank again for having this interview, cheers m8!

Ed: It’s been a pleasure, cheers Marko.
