Interivew with Scott Boms at wishingline.com
Marko: Heya beem me up Scott-y :)!
Scott: Hey Marko! Never heard that before (Groan) ;)
Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Scott: I’m 30, bordering on old age already, married with three cats and suffering through renovation-itis in Toronto, Canada as the readers of my blog will know.
Marko: How are you doing these days?
Scott: I’m good. Very busy and just trying to keep my head above water.
Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Scott: I guess back in my Apple II days in school. It was either that or my old Commodore 64. Not sure which came first anymore.
Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
Scott: Hmm, that’s a tough one – almost as hard as choosing a favourite album.
I’m a big music fan and have really got into limited edition concert posters and screen printing, so I’d have to say Aesthetic Apparatus (http://www.aestheticapparatus.com) is a real fave right now.
Marko: when you launched wishingline.com are you happy with the result of the site?
Scott: Pretty much. Towards the end of the design/development, because I only had about two weeks to really get it all together, timelines got tight and things started to get a bit rushed. I didn’t get to properly finish some the details as much as I would have liked, or in the case of redesigning the blog portion, not at all (and still haven’t…). There’s a plan in place to take care of that, to fix some of those problems and just make the whole thing better.
Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this context)
Scott: Since April, I’ve been renovating the first floor of my house, but otherwise, I play the drums in a little indie rock band called The Darns (www.thedarns.com). I like to read too, but haven’t had much opportunity to do as much of that as I’d like.
Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Scott: I’m a tea man myself. Iced or hot.
Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Scott Boms?
Scott: I’m usually up around 7:30/8AM. Make coffee. Shower. Head to the office and deal with any urgent e-mails and otherwise try to get the frivolous work out of the way before buckling down to work through the day. I will often take a break at lunchtime and go for a walk in the neighbourhood or just go get some air. Then there’s playtime with the kittens before getting back to work. Things usually wind down around 6 unless I have rehearsal in which case I’m out the door and headed to the studio for 6.
Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Scott: I’ve had an amazing amount of word of mouth, little bits through friends or acquaintances, but mostly via the Wishingline site. Given that I haven’t done any kind of real advertising per se, it’s nice to see this kind of reaction.
Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Scott: My wife and family, Doug Coupland, David Carson, Apple, Zuzana Licko, Jon Hicks, Michael Stipe.
Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Scott: A musician. And maybe one day soon someone will pay a bit of attention to my little band and I will be.
Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Scott: I really enjoy the interview series you’re doing.
Marko: If you could change something on the site what would it be?
Scott: I think the site would be better served with a less box-y looking design by removing the black bars on the sides and cleaning up some of the sidebar content. There seems to be missing images too by the way.
Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Scott: I’m a rock/alternative kind of guy mostly, but I also like a lot of folk/bluegrass, indie, jazz, etc.
Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Scott: My wife would probably say Burritos these days. She got me hooked on the food from a local burrito place here in Toronto.
Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Scott: If I’m out it’s usually because I’m playing a gig somewhere. Likely a bar or club.
some relaxing question to follow
Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Scott: Thai. Usually more spicy.
Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Scott: Coke with Lime.
Marko: html or css?
Scott: XHTML and CSS.
Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Scott: I don’t watch too much TV anymore, but I always make time for The Simpsons.
Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Scott: Way too much. So much so that Apple’s .Mac bookmark sync is choking on them. One day I will find the time to prune them.
Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Scott: Nature, simplicity and user-friendliness in design, good music, interior design and architecture.
Marko: Thank again for having this interview Scott Boms, Cheers!
Scott: Thanks Marko. My pleasure.
