Jake Tracey Interview

Interivew with Jake Tracey at jaketracey.com
Marko: Heya Jake!
Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Jake: I’m 19 years old and live in Newcastle, Australia. I work as a interface designer for a bunch of clients around the world.
Marko: How are you doing these days?
Jake: I’m doing great, keeping busy. :)
Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Jake: I think the first time I saw a computer was in Kindergarten in primary school. It was an Apple II, if I recall correctly.
Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
Jake: My favorite piece of art is definitely Boticelli’s ‘The Birth of Venus’. I don’t usually take much notice of classical art, but this piece has always stuck in my mind as truly magnificent. Favorite website? At the moment, it’s Something Awful, the writers there are comic geniuses.
Marko: when you launched jaketracey.com are you happy with the result of the site?
Jake: Yeah. Blogging is great and I’ve really enjoyed the feedback from my readers a lot.
Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this context)
Jake: I work quite a lot, but working from home does have a few perks :) If I’m not working you can probably find me at the gym or riding around the beaches here for a swim.
Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Jake: Water. I drink a few tall glasses every day at least, and I usually have a water bottle with me.
Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Jake Tracey?
Jake: Wake up, have a cup of coffee while I check e-mails and news sites, then start work. Depending on how I feel i’ll go out to a cafe or to the beach to work. After that I either go to the gym or do some weights at home, then go for a bike ride and come home to work until I fall asleep, usually around midnight.
Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Jake: I just kind of fell into this industry actually. I enjoyed playing with Photoshop and Illustrator when I was younger, and after a while met a few people that I did websites for. As my skills increased I started working for bigger clients around town here, and a lot of other guys I met online. Now that I’ve got a pretty large previous client base and reasonably successful blog it isn’t too hard to pick up new work.
Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Jake: I do my best not to be influenced by other designers too much, however my friendships with other designers Joseph Wain (niggle.com) and Mike Rundle from 9rules have helped me to begin to refine my own style.
Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
Jake: My background isn’t really in design, although the progression into full time development was a little strange. It’s been a lot of hard work keeping up to date with best practices and such, but it’s well worth it.
Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Jake: I’m hoping to make a career move closer to advertising in the next few years, so I figure thats what I would be doing, advertising & marketing.
Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Jake: It’s great. I’ve enjoyed reading the interviews with other designers a lot!
Marko: If you could change something on the site what would it be?
Jake: The only niggle I have is the Javascript navigation. It seems to be a little jumpy when I mouseover some parts.
Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Jake: Mostly jazz or downtempo stuff, but I do enjoy normal club music and punk rock.
Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Jake: I would have to say chocolate, when I get the chance to eat some.
Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Jake: Varies a lot, but usually you will find me in one of the few clubs around town, or chilling out with some mates.
some relaxing question to follow
Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Jake: Chinese!
Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Jake: Diet coke.
Marko: html or css?
Jake: HTML, for sure.
Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Jake: I don’t watch very much, but I have been enjoying Battlestar Galactica and Arrested Development.
Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Jake: A few comedy sites and Internet banking.
Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Jake: Life in general does, I guess. I just want to get out there and be the best person I can be – the harder you work to make every day great the better they all are.
Marko: Thank again for having this interview Jake, Cheers!
Jake: No problem, Thank you.
