Interview with Michael Hay at dark-i.com
Marko: Heya Michael!
Marko: For our readers could you tell something about yourself? (Year old and other stuff)
Michael: I’m Michael Hay, 22 and have a small design studio (KoreLogic.co.uk) in Leeds, UK.
Marko: How are you doing these days?
Michael: Very good actually… I have been working on lots of things recently, both client and personal stuff.
More excitingly, I am just embarking on a project with Bojan Janjanin
which is all hush hush at the moment. It should be very interesting and I’m sure we’ll have something to tease you all with soon.
Marko: Yeah I header about that – can’t wait to see what it is :)
Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Michael: From a very young age I was pulling stuff apart and finding out how they work (though they were never quite the same after) The first time I got my hands on a computer was with the commadore64; a painful invention that took hours to load software from cassettes. Madness.
Marko: What is your favorite art work / website!?
Michael: I love gradients of colour and really simple designs that have great typography. Yeah you may think I’m easy to please really.
Marko: When you launched dark-i.com are you happy with the result of the site?
Michael: Well it’s still early days, the site is quite popular and it has had quite a bit of press. There are still some teething problems I’m getting round to fixing. Not to mention all the new feature ideas which have poured in.
Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this
context)
Michael: Spare time is taken up with sleep and relaxation. Perhaps abit of personal project work in between.
Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Michael: I love a nice cup of coffee, although herbal teas are a regular drink now too. I probably have around 8 cups a day.
Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Michael Hay ?
Michael: All the days blur into one really. I aim to get to the office for about 10am and then check email/feeds. The rest of the day is spent on the phone and on project work. I’ll pack up around 5:30pm, assuming nothing urgent is going on. After work I usually head home for some relaxation, or head out to meet friends.
Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Michael: KoreKogic sends around 5 tenders a week and they come from a mixture of sources; internet marketing, recommendation and the odd random call to the office.
Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Michael: I would say Google. I’m not talking about them as a company but I would say it’s the one place I go for answers, no matter what I need to know. I’ll always find inspiration by tapping in some key words.
I also love buildings and architecture, they are a great source of ideas.
Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Michael: I think if I wasn’t a designer I’d be some kind of engineer or architect.
Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Michael: I gave you a 6 in DarkEye!
Marko: If you could change something on the site what would it be?
Michael: Some gradients would look nice!
Marko: Yes indeed I thought the same thing some weeks back :)
Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Michael: The killers / Feeder.
marko: wow my fav also – i just buyed Pushing the sense a couple days ago !!
Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Michael: Indian.
Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Michael: I enjoy a good film so I’m usually sat in front of the big screen or out for a meal.
some relaxing question to follow
Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Michael: Thai I think. More flavors!
Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Michael: Neither.
Marko: html or css?
Michael: No, no… XHTML and CSS2. Can one exist without the other these days?
Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Michael: I do, only selected programmers though. My favorites are Top Gear (The Brits will know this one) and 24.
I’m also an avid viewer of the UKhistory channel on freeview.
Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Michael: I’m awful at book-marking stuff. I think I have about 3-4 all very boring .net sites.
Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Michael: Quite frankly, everything. You never really know when to expect inspiration.
Marko: Thank again for having this interview Michael, Cheers!
