Interview with Veerle Pieters at veerle.duoh.com
Marko: Heya Veerle <3_<3 !
Veerle: Hi Marko
Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Veerle: I’m 36 years old, live in Belgium (Dutch part, Flanders) together with my partner Geert.
Marko: How are you doing these days?
Veerle: Suffering from the bird flu. Just kidding! I’m pretty busy, maybe a bit too busy that I hardly find time to enjoy life a bit more.
Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Veerle: Phew, that’s a long time ago, I think it was 1988-89 if I’m not mistaken and it was on an LC. My first thoughts were “what a cute little buddy”.
Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
Veerle: I love eendar , FrankSturgesReps and the tipika blog . All of those make me wish that I had some more time that I can spent with my pencils ;-)
Marko: when you launched veerle.duoh.com are you happy with the result of the site?
Veerle: It was one of those very rare occasions that I was instantly happy with it. Normally when working on my own stuff I am my own worst client, never pleased etc.
Marko: What do you do in your spare time (I do realize that spare time, in this context, is pretty relative)?
Veerle: Spare time? What’s that?! ;-) I try to make some time each week to do some Yoga to de-stress a bit. And when I’m not behind my Mac I can enjoy a good chick movie or an British detective mystery.
Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Veerle: Coffee, but I recently reduced my daily doses since I started to react a little weird. Result is, I need to kick the habit. A glass of Amaretto (Italian liqueur) now and then is also on the menu.
Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Veerle Pieters?
Veerle: I mostly wake-up at 7am and start my day with a cup of coffee and a quick look at my mailbox and my RSS feeds. Most of the time I get depressed because of the large amount of unread items and most of the time I blame Roger Johansson for posting to much useful stuff ;-) After that I dig myself into Photoshop, Illustrator, CSSEdit etc. At lunch time I try to catch up on some more RSS or read a magazine. I also always pray that I don’t get too many calls because I hate that when I am in the middle of something. My day mostly ends around 9-10pm and I watch a little TV till my mind is at peace otherwise I can’t sleep.
Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Veerle: To be honest I can’t remember the time that I needed to get on the road to visit some potential clients. Now most of our work comes through the word of mouth or the Internet. It’s a great luxury to be in such position and I like it that way. Going out for work isn’t a pleasant thing you know ;-)
Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Veerle: My greatest influence was Doug Bowman, I really like the quality of work he produces. Doug and Dave Shea are the people responsible for sparkling my interest in CSS. In fact the whole webstandards community are my influence because every time I see a nice design I get the redesign bug but time is always the party pooper.
Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like? How did that take place and why?
Veerle: Yes it is but print design. I started webdesign because my partner Geert said it would be a great idea. Turns out he was right and it was about time too because things weren’t going that well back then. I was focusing on the wrong kind of target group.
Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Veerle: An air hostess maybe or an movie star?... No seriously I wouldn’t have a clue.
Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Veerle: It’s kinda black isn’t it? But maybe that’s just me because I am a color junkie!
Marko: O it’s really that bad? ( :)
Veerle: Yes : p I got paid to say that : /
Marko: If you could change something on the site what would it be?
Veerle: Color, color please…
Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Veerle: I mostly listen to deep house. It’s a cocktail of jazz, soul, funk and disco shaken and stirred to get the perfect blend. CafŽ del Mar, Naked, Hed Kandi, Bargrooves and Defected are among my favorites. I’m also suffering from an 80’s addiction.
Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Veerle: Italian… Pasta baby!
Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Veerle: A quick weekend trip to Ibiza Pacha…. that’s what most people think of me. Still if true I’m all for it! I am an old lady that stays at home on a Saturday and go out during Summer holiday to make up for a whole year :-) Living in Belgium, going out for dinner is our way of being Burgundian. We have GREAT FOOD. And it isn’t French fries suckers! Belgium did invent this, it is in our culture :-p
some relaxing question to follow
Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Veerle: Chinese BUT Hong Kong because that’s a big difference (so I heard).
Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Veerle: Coke
Marko: html or asp?
Veerle: XHTML, ASP sucks, it messes up my templates and I hate that :-p
Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Veerle: My favorite show is Coldcase. I ordered Lost on DVD because of the great things I’ve heard about it.
Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Veerle: I am a bookmark whore, I bookmark everything and now I need some guide to find stuff again. My bookmarks mostly consist of web dev bookmarks and inspiration related stuff. Note to self I need a bookmark organizer.
Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Veerle: That can be a lot of things but Nature is always close or music and colors in general. Did I say I love colors!
Marko: Thank again for having this interview, cheers!
Veerle: Thanks for putting up with me ;-)
