Joseph Wain Interview

Interivew with Joseph Wain at penandthink.com

Marko: Heya Joseph!

Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)

Joseph: I’m 26, more or less, and I feel old. Usually I don’t tell people my age – when I was twenty-four, I claimed to be “two dozen” and when twenty-five, I said “XXV”.

Marko: How are you doing these days?

Joseph: Fine, thanks. Today I do not have a hangover.

Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?

Joseph: I started using computers around age 8. Crazy tape-driven Commodore systems, an Apple IIe and shortly thereafter my first Mac 128k. I remember the Illustrator 88 icon on my desktop, and designing phony business cards for my uncle’s print shop using MacPaint. (FatBits for life!)

Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?

Joseph: That’s a difficult question to answer. Spur-of-the-moment: Le Corbusier seating.

Marko: when you launched penandthink.com are you happy with the result of the site?

Joseph: Yes. It was done for the CSS Reboot before last, which means it’s now pretty much stale, but I never re-build my own website unless I have something that I feel is expressive and worthy of attention. (That is to say, you, and people linked from Stylegala look at my website far more often than my clients do, so who’s it really for?)

Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this context)

Joseph: I roam the streets of New York late at night, seeking the perfect bagel and ogling the architecture.

Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?

Joseph: I really like visiting out-of-the-way ethnic food shops and buying stuff from the “weird drinks” section. You know, strawberry soda from Japan, aloe-flavored drinks with Hebrew on the can, Mystery Fruit beverages Fiji, drinks with chunks and bits. Kind of a weird hobby I guess.

Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Joseph Wain?

Joseph: Up early, read the news (RSS), tool around on the web for a few minutes, and then dive in. Work until I’m burnt or until I run out of creative juice, then I go for a walk, or go play video games or similar to shut my brain off for a bit. Phone, e-mail and IM traffic is constant and I love it.

Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?

Joseph: Word of mouth.

Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?

Joseph: Er… This is also hard. How do you mean? I’ll just say Steve Wozniak and Donald Norman.

Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?

Joseph: I’ve been working on the web since 1998.

Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?

Joseph: I would be a lobbyist working to privatize the space industry or selling real estate on the moon to stimulate the space race.

Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?

Joseph: Looks nice.

Marko: If you could change something on the site what would it be?

Joseph: I suggest an “about” section. I’m still not entirely sure what it’s about.

Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?

Joseph: Downtempo stuff. Monkey Radio.

Marko: What’s your favorite food?

Joseph: I don’t know what it’s called, but there’s a Vietnamese dish that consists of raw and pickled vegetables that you wrap in rice paper bits and dip in various sauces. I could eat that all day.

Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?

Joseph: Hang out in Times Square watching the crowds maybe.

some relaxing question to follow

Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?

Joseph: Thai.

Marko: Coke or Pepsi?

Joseph: I don’t care for either, but if I’m drinking soda it’s Coke cut by about 3/4 with water and a slice of lime squeezed in. That soda junk is just way too sweet.

Marko: html or css?

Joseph: Don’t mind if I do.

Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?

Joseph: Don’t watch TV, but I recently watched all 14 episodes of the American TV show “Firefly” which was pretty damn enjoyable.

Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?

Joseph: Truth be told, there’s not a single bookmark in my bookmarks bar. I either remember the URL or chuck it in del.icio.us. And I very rarely look up something in my delicious list – for whatever reason I’m just not big on bookmarking things. I figure that if it’s important enough I can find it again with Google.

Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.

Joseph: I’m inspired by successful design in any medium.

Marko: Thank again for having this interview Joseph,Cheers!

Joseph: You’re quite welcome!
