Cameron Adams Interview

Interivew with Cameron Adams at themaninblue.com
Marko: Heya Cameron!
Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Cameron: I’m just about to turn 26 and I work as a freelance designer in Melbourne, Australia. In January my first book comes out! It’s contains everything to do with JavaScript and is published by Sitepoint.
Marko: How are you doing these days?
Cameron: Probably the best I’ve ever been. Business is good, friends are good. Life is good!
Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Cameron: Hmmmm … I would have to say that I first encountered a computer when the lurid red and blue graphics of a game called “Space Commander” beckoned me into the world of DOS.
Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
Cameron: My favourite artwork would have to be that of MC Escher. He perfectly blended the craftsmanship of hand-drawn graphics with the technical thought of mathematics, all wrapped up in a crazy, vivid imagination.
Marko: when you launched themaninblue.com are you happy with the result of the site?
Cameron: Yes, I was pretty happy with it. It was — and still is — a fantastic way of getting me recognised on the scene, and although you grow tired of anything over the years, it just had its second birthday and I’m still fairly comfortable with it; though a re-design might be in the pipeline sometime soon.
Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this context)
Cameron: I try and play as much soccer as I possibly can. Otherwise I enjoy DJing and producing music.
Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Cameron: I would probably have to say milk. Flavoured with your choice of chocolate, strawberry, spearmint, caramel, or just plain icy cold. COuple of glasses a day?
Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Cameron Adams?
Cameron: There’s really no typical day for me. Generally I get about 3 – 4 hours sleep between 8AM & noon, but otherwise I could be working onsite doing CSS, designing a website for a client in Sydney, coding some JavaScript for someone in Sweden, or consulting with a startup in Pasadena. That’s why I like the Web — it’s always different.
Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Cameron: Ummmm … I don’t think I’ve actually ever gone and looked for work? My weblog has been a fantastic conduit for generating leads, and once you begin putting out some quality work, referrals should be naturally evolve your customer base.
Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Cameron: The people who I look up to most from a pure web design perspective are Cuban Council (www.cubancouncil.com). They make some kick-ass interfaces, it’s just a shame their code is so crap.
Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
Cameron: I have a pretty loose background in design, well, actually none. I’ve got two degrees in Science and Law, but while I was studying I picked up on my interest in graphic design from high school and landed a part-time job as a desktop publisher, after some work on the university newspaper. On the job one day I was asked to make a website, and the rest writes itself.
Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Cameron: If I wasn’t on the Web, I would be a musician.
Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Cameron: To be honest, I’d never heard of it, but after visiting it, I can see you’re building up a great array of interviews. Keep up the good work!
Marko: If you could change something on the site what would it be?
Cameron: Make the various sections a bit more coherent — there’s a little too much loose space going on.
Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Cameron: All sorts: Jazz (Coltrane, Davis, Brubeck, Jarrett, Hancock), Rock (Oasis, Ben Folds’ Five, Rage Against The Machine, Powderfinger), but my main love is Electronic/Dance (Hybrid, BT, Mylo, Prodigy, Underworld, Chemical Brothers, High Contrast, LTJ Bukem …)
Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Cameron: Hard … probably something with chocolate. The new Wonka Whipple Scrumptious Caramel Delight bars are pretty good. THough I’m partial to Chinese custard buns and baked cheesecake.
Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Cameron: Down to the park for some soccer, and sleep, delicious sleep.
some relaxing question to follow
Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Cameron: Chinese
Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Cameron: Coke
Marko: html or css?
Cameron: SVG
Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Cameron: Late night with Conan O’Brien
Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Cameron: Links to all the sites I plan to criticise in my next blog entry (but never get around to doing).
Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Cameron: Everything should inspire you: the way light plays on the surface of a river; the noise of the train as it goes through the tube; the pattern on the couch; today’s #27 song. Everything and anything.
Marko: Thank again for having this interview Cameron,Cheers!

I can always appreciate these interviews with different graphic designers. I have a hard time breaking away from the computer and actually doing some work when I can be reading something about a fellow designer. Although I’d have to say that I have a ways to go—fresh out of college—so I can appreciate the interviews even more because they give me a little bit of insight into what my life is going to be like. Although I seriously hope that I will be getting more than 4 hours of sleep. The one thing about these interviews that makes it hard for me is that I can’t directly ask questions of the people who were interviewed…like I would love to know: why SVG??? That’s not necessarily shocking but it’s definitely different than the answers you’ve gotten in the past from other guys…and is the book published under your real name because I’m having quite a time finding it and why did you write all about javascript? It’s just one of those situations where I love to learn about these guys but I’m also anxious to be able to pick their brains. Is there anyway you could put me in touch with Cameron and some of these other guys so I can do that?
Is this interview available in podcast? I’m always on the go yet I really don’t want to miss anything. An interview with a graphics designer is one thing that really catches my attention. But because of my on-the-run schedule I would love it if this is downloadable and can be saved in my iPod.
