Vicious Summer Interview

Interivew with Vicious Summer at viciousenterprises.com

Marko: Heya Vicious !
Vicious: Well, hello there, Marko! By the way, your name reminds me of the time I busted out my front tooth playing Marco Polo…

Marko: For our reader’s could you tell something about yourself? (year old and other stuff)
Vicious: I’m 27 years old, born and raised in San Diego, California. I love surfing, traveling, working, playing tennis and tons of other stuff I don’t have time for!

Marko: How are you doing these days?
Vicious: Today I’m sick! But other then that, things are phenomenal these days. Business is starting to cool off after the Halloween and Christmas rushes and I’m looking forward to a LONG vacation in Costa Rica.

Marko: When did you first encounter a keyboard or computer?
Vicious: My mom bought the very first Macintosh! That was in 1984 – 1985, so I was about 7 years old. My older brother (Shawn Hogan of DigitalPoint.com) had the Commodore 64 around that time, but I was way too cool to be interested in his BBS and whatever other programming stuff he was doing…Or maybe it was because I was 7 and playing with Barbies =)!

Marko: What is your favorite art work /website!?
Vicious: I love pin up art and Joyce Ballentyne has some great pieces.

Rusty Pistachio at pnutjewelry.com is an amazing jewelry artist and local San Diego photographer Anthony Ghiglia has some great prints too.

Marko: when you launched viciousenterprises.com are you happy with the result of the site?
Vicious: ViciousEnterprises.com doesn’t bring home the bacon, it’s just a portal to my online stores. I really had no idea what to expect, so I was happy with the results to say the least.

Marko: What do you do in your spare time (We realize that spare time, in this context)
Vicious: I spend my spare time surfing, snowboarding, traveling, playing with my dog, working out and working. I work all the time. I’m constantly thinking of new ways to expand and make money.

Marko: Do you have a favorite drink? How much of it do you drink?
Vicious: I drink two Redbulls every single day. I buy Redbull in bulk ($31 for a case at Costco…haha). I love red wine too. And, you can’t beat cold unfiltered saki and Asahi with sushi.

Marko: Would you care to give us a brief overview of what a typical day is like for Vicious Summer?
Vicious: I get up around 11am (don’t laugh! I’m trying to get up earlier, I swear!), the girl that works for me usually comes in at 9am, so I check to make sure she has everything squared away. I jump in the shower, feed the animals (dog and fish) and start work. On a typical day, I answer customer service emails, process the orders that come through the websites, place orders for inventory, check in shipments of product that have been received, take product photos for ViciousStyle.com, add new products and content to the sites, I’m also a moderator at my brothers webmaster forum (forums.digitalpoint.com)...Now that I’m listing my typical day, I realize that there is no way I can list it all…I do SO many different things everyday, it’s mind blowing.

Marko: I am always wondering how people such as yourself go about getting work? How do you do it?
Vicious: Well, since I run the show, I don’t really have to “go about getting work”. I guess I go about getting customers which I do by maintaining my customer base, adding a bit of search engine optimization and a tiny bit of marketing (mailing lists, offline advertising and online advertising).

Marko: Who are some of your biggest influences?
Vicious: My brother and my mom.

Marko: Is your background in design? What was the progression into web development and design like?
Vicious: I have a degree in fashion design. Everything I do now is self taught. I bought the book “HTML for Dummies” and learned the basics. I’ve learned a little bit about CSS and PHP, but if I need something like a script, I beg my brother to write it for me since I’m not really a programmer. I just pretend to be sometimes…haha. I picked up a copy of Dream Weaver, Fireworks and Photoshop and taught myself how to build a site and graphics with that. Then my brother told me that I should learn about SEO (search engine optimization), so I did. And here I am…

Marko: If you where not a designer/programmer what would you be?
Vicious: I’d have my own clothing line. I would already have one if design/programming didn’t take up so much of my time! I need a clone…

Marko: How do you like our site mcville.net?
Vicious: http://mcville.net/index.htm (which is linked to from your “home” link in your footer) gives me a 404 error, but other then that, it’s great! I have a short attention span, so it took me a second to figure out what it was all about, maybe you need an “about us” page? Wait a sec, was this one of those questions were I wasn’t supposed to be so honest?

Marko: If you could change something on mcville what would it be?
Vicious: Oops, see above ;).

Marko: What kind of music do you fancy?
Vicious: I LOVE all music. Here is a quick sampling from my iPod: Maroon 5, DJ Valium, Gorillaz, Patsy Clein, Benny Benassi, Ray Charles, Madonna, Ziggy Marley, DJ Trashy, Mike Jones, 2Pac, Black Eyed Peas, Nelly Furtado, Ying Yang Twins, Wolfsheim, Mana, Gwen Stefani, Agent Orange, A Perfect Circle, Brian Setzer, Tomahawk, etc. etc.

Marko: What’s your favorite food?
Vicious: Sushi and potatoes. Not together though.

Marko: Where do you get out on Saturday’s?
Vicious: I usually travel on the weekends. I’m going up to my cabin at the local ski resorts for some snowboarding this weekend.

some relaxing question to follow

Marko: Chinese or Thai (food)?
Vicious: Thai!

Marko: Coke or Pepsi?
Vicious: I don’t really like cola, but either is fine if you throw some Captain Morgans Spiced Rum in there…

Marko: html or css?
Vicious: CSS (I wish I was more proficient in it!)

Marko: Do you watch television? If so, do you have a favorite show?
Vicious: No. I have a TV in my house. It rots your brain and makes you fat…haha.

Marko: What would we find in your favorites bookmarks-bar?
Vicious: Hmmm. Let me look: ebay.com, authorize.net, viciousstyle.com, hustlerpanties.com, Paypal.com, forums.digitalpoint.com, surfshot.com…not very exciting, mostly just work stuff. I was going to throw in a really bad porn site too, but I didn’t want to scare you. haha.

Marko: What inspires you? This doesn’t have to be design related.
Vicious: The success of my business inspires me. I would have never thought that I could be this successful doing something I absolutely love.

Marko: Thank again for having this interview Vicious,Cheers!
